Benny Wiame

Benny Wiame studied at the Lemmens Institute in Leuven with Léon Petré. He then studied trumpet and chamber music at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels with Jerôme De Brauwer. In 1984 he became solo trumpeter with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Flanders. In 1989 he became assistant teacher at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels. From 1992 to 1997 he was solo trumpeter with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and since 1994 he has taught trumpet at the Royal Conservatory in Ghent. From 2000 to November 2022 he also taught at the Maastricht Conservatory. Since 2008 he has been teaching at the Lemmens Institute, where he succeeded his former teacher Léon Pétré. As a soloist he has played with many orchestras and conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle, Valery Gergiev, Kurt Sanderling, Bernard Haitink and Jaap van Zweden. In 2010 he founded his own brass ensemble New Brass Directions with the better brass players from the Belgian jazz scene and classical world.
