Dr. Fred David Romines

Marywood, his responsibilities included helping oversee departmental operations and serving as artistic director for the Marywood University Wind Ensemble, Wind Symphony, and the Northeastern Youth Wind Ensemble. His academic responsibilities included undergraduate conducting courses, instrumental methods classes, and student teacher supervision. Additionally, Romines founded and administered two of the largest collegiate band outreach programs in the Northeastern United States. The Junior and Senior Wind Band Celebrations annually attract over 500 public school band students from throughout the region and beyond to the Marywood Campus to study with band clinicians who have earned national reputations for artistic achievement.

During a 44-year professional career, Romines has directed bands from public and private schools, community groups, collegiate ensembles, military, and professional organizations. He has guest conducted throughout the United States (36 states) and in Canada, Spain, Italy, South Korea, Germany, and China. He has served as guest artist in residence at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music in Chengdu, China, Yunnan Arts University in Kunming, China, and Sang Myung University in Seoul, Korea. Romines is only the third American Band Conductor (after Frederick Fennell – Eastman School of Music and Frank Battisti – New England Conservatory) to conduct a full concert program with the People’s Liberation Army Band in Beijing China. Romines is a past winner of the III Stage Internazionale per Direttori D’ Orchestra di fiati – Accademia - Milan, Italy and was awarded the responsibility of leading a chamber winds group of musicians from Teatro alla Scala (Milano) in a series of subscription concerts throughout Northern Italy. Pulitzer Prize winning American composer Joseph Schwanter has described Romines’ work as “Insightful and Engaging”.

Romines has received multiple National Band Association’s Citation of Excellence Awards his for contributions to the wind band profession and, in 2014, Romines was awarded the Marywood University Distinguished Faculty Award for Distinction in Discipline. He is a former member of the editorial board of the Music Educators Journal and serves the John Philip Sousa Foundation as a member of the Sudler Award Committee. Since 2017, Romines has been an educational clinician for Conn-Selmer, Inc. In this capacity, he works with bands, band directors, and school administrators toward improvement of band programs. Romines has been chosen to serve on the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 selection committee for the Walter Beeler Memorial Composition Prize, a prestigious bi-annual wind ensemble/concert band composition contest.

Romines earned Bachelor and Master of Music diplomas in Music Education from the University of Tennessee - Knoxville and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Conducting and Conducting Pedagogy from the University of Southern Mississippi, where he studied conducting with Dr. Thomas V. Fraschillo. Romines has received additional conducting instruction from Richard Blatti, Ray Cramer, Tom Lee, Allan McMurray, and Steven Pratt.
