Dr. Kelvin Jones

Conn Selmer Educational and Marching Arts Clinician

Dr. Kelvin Jones (he/ him) is former Director of the LSU Tiger Band and the Assistant Director of Bands at LSU. His responsibilities included conducting the LSU Symphonic Band, teaching undergraduate and graduate-level conducting, and leading the Grammy nominated and award winning Golden Band from Tigerland.

 

As a conductor, Jones has conducted ensembles international and nationally, including Carnegie Hall in New York City. He has worked on new music commissioning projects and has received praise on his interpretations from composers Steven Bryant, Alex Shapiro, Omar Thomas, John Mackey, Anthony Barfield, Ayatey Shabazz, Joshua Hobbs, among others.

 

Jones has also served as a consultant for school districts & music programs throughout the country along with presenting at international, national, and state music conferences across the US. He’s a published author, motivational speaker, has travelled internationally working with music programs, and an active clinician working with Conn Selmer’s Division of Education as an Educational Consultant, Smith-Walbridge Drum Major Clinic held in Charleston, Illinois along with serving in numerous capacities within the College Band Directors National Association.

 

A huge advocate and champion for diversity, inclusion, and equal rights, Jones serves as an ambassador for the university through his service and mentorship across various initiatives and contributions throughout campus and across the country. He received the 2022 LSU Faculty Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Mentorship award given to faculty who are making outstanding contributions to the mentoring activities of faculty, staff and/or students from underrepresented groups.

 

He is the former band director at West Feliciana High School in St. Francisville, LA. At WFHS, he led an active, comprehensive music program that produced numerous award-winning performances, including the 2013 United States National Presidential Inauguration Music Festival in Washington DC. He holds degrees in Music from Jackson State and Louisiana State Universities. In his spare time, he runs a real estate company entitled APE Investments (All Positive Energy), a bar-b-que catering business (Bones Jones BBQ), and enjoys spending time with his wife Felicia, a nurse practitioner, and sons Samuel and Kye-Parker.
