Carys Sutherland
Praised by Opera Today for her “exceptional musicianship”, Canadian-American horn player Carys Sutherland began playing at the age of 10 and has since performed at major concert halls and festivals globally, including Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the BBC Proms. In 2024, she joined Symphony Nova Scotia as Principal Horn and that same year was recognized in CBC’s Classical 30 under 30.
Carys has performed with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the New World Symphony, the Princeton Symphony Orchestra, and as a soloist with the Juilliard Orchestra. Her recent festival appearances include the Marlboro Music Festival and the Music Academy of the West.
Carys earned a Bachelor of Music from the Juilliard School, studying under Julie Landsman and Jennifer Montone as a proud recipient of a Kovner Fellowship. During her studies, she held a Gluck Community Engagement Fellowship and a teaching fellowship in the Music Advancement Program. While based in New York, Carys served as Principal Horn of Symphony in C in Camden, New Jersey, and also performed with the Handel and Haydn Society and Juilliard415 on period instruments.
Away from the horn, Carys is a regular program writer for the Juilliard School, her alma mater, and has also written for the New World Symphony.
