Derek Pyle

Derek Pyle is a studio tenor and bass trombonist in Los Angeles, California. Equally versed in jazz, classical, Latin, pop, rock, funk, and musical theater, Derek was named the lead trombonist of the John Daversa Progressive Big Band in 2022.

Derek is featured on the John Daversa album “American Dreamers”, which received three Grammy® Awards in 2019, including Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album. He can also be heard on the live John Daversa albums “Improvisatory Observatory” Volumes 1, 2, 3, and 4 recorded at the Baked Potato Jazz Club in 2023.

Derek has recently appeared with the Tom Kubis Big Band, the Kim Richmond Concert Jazz Orchestra, the Alan Chan Jazz Orchestra, the Western Standard Time Ska Orchestra, the SoCal Brass Consortium, the Palisades Brass, Tito Puente, Jr., Sal Valentinetti, Haley Reinhart, Slide FX, Bones West, and the Hollywood Trombones.

Derek has also held teaching positions in California, Texas, and Florida, including a brief stint as Director of Bands at Miami Springs Senior High School, where he was named Teacher of the Year.

Derek completed a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies at the University of North Texas in 2016 and a Master of Music degree in Studio Music and Trombone at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music in 2018. Derek’s teachers include Vern Kagarice, Jan Kagarice, Tony Baker, Steve Wiest, Andre Hayward, Dante Luciani, Chuck Bergeron, Charlie Loper, and Dick Nash.

He exclusively performs on Bach trombones and A.R. Resonance mouthpieces.
