Eric Lee
Eric Lee is a celebrated Malaysian conductor and trombonist whose work has shaped Malaysia’s wind and symphonic music scene. Known for his leadership, education efforts, and artistic vision, he has played a pivotal role in raising the standard of music performance and nurturing young talent across the country.
Eric’s passion for music began early, especially with the trombone. In 1994, he founded the PJ Youth Symphonic Band, offering young musicians a platform to perform and grow. This initiative helped inspire a broader movement in youth music education in Malaysia.
Later, he founded the Philharmonic Winds of Malaysia (initially the Symphonic Winds of the National Symphony Orchestra). Under his leadership, it became one of the country’s top ensembles, recognized for its quality and its contribution to Malaysia’s cultural landscape.
In 1997, Eric received a full scholarship to study trombone at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. He trained under renowned musicians and expanded his skills in conducting with Mark Shanahan. Starting in 1996, he joined the Asian Youth Orchestra, touring over 40 cities in 20 countries and performing at venues like the Royal Concertgebouw and Sydney Opera House.
Eric made his conducting debut in 1999 and has since led various productions and orchestras. In 2006, he received the National Young Music Director Award. As a band director in schools, his students have earned top honors in local and international competitions.
Currently, Eric is Artistic Director and Resident Conductor of the Philharmonic Winds of Malaysia, President of the National Band Director Association, and Principal Trombonist of the National Symphony Orchestra. He’s also active internationally as a guest musician, adjudicator, and clinician.
Eric Lee continues to impact music through education, performance, and leadership—cementing his role as a driving force in Malaysia’s musical development.
