She was recognized in the 2020 Downbeat Critics Poll as a Rising Star Alto Saxophonist and Up and Coming Artist of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association. With a unique fusion of Jazz, Hip-Hop, and Soul, Lakecia Benjamin's charismatic saxophone skills have graced stages with legends like Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, and The Roots. A native of New York City, Lakecia began her musical journey at Fiorello LaGuardia High School and honed her craft at New York's New School University. She collaborated with jazz luminaries early on, playing alongside Clark Terry and Reggie Workman. Her talent led to collaborations with Rashied Ali, Christian McBride, Gregory Porter, and others. Lakecia's album "Pursuance" pays tribute to the Coltrane legacy, featuring a diverse array of contemporary talents including Reggie Workman, Ron Carter, Gary Bartz, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Meshell Ndegeocello, and more. Her latest album "Phoenix," produced by Terri Lyne Carrington, presents a dynamic musical evolution. Collaborators include Dianne Reeves, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Patrice Rushen, and Wayne Shorter.
