William Chien

Dr. William Chien is from Taipei, Taiwan. He is an international performer, author and educator. He has performed throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. Dr. Chien has served as a committee member and judge for jazz competition in the First Asian Saxophone Congress. Dr. Chien has commissioned and premiered several compositions at several World Saxophone Congresses, as well as at North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial Conferences and Navy International Saxophone Symposium. In 2022, he was invited to perform Henri Tomasi’s Ballade with University of North Texas DMA saxophone ensemble. In 2019, He was featured as a soloist and performed in Southwestern Music Festival at Dallas Meyerson Symphony Hall. In 2016, Dr. Chien performed Claude Smith’s Fantasia for Alto Saxophone and Band with the Kaohsiung Citizens Band. Dr. Chien is the author of “Saxophone Learning for Novices” and “Saxophone Altissimo”, published by Mercury Publishing House. He has released a saxophone-guitar duet recording “Formosa Fantasy” with Austrian guitarist Stefan Skrilecz. His new trio album "Four Season - Tribute to Astor Piazzolla" will release in 2024. Since 2017, Dr. Chien started a Youtube tutorial channel and released dozen videos about saxophone technique and jazz improvisation. This channel is one of the earliest platform for Chinese-speaking audience, it became very popular in several countries such as China, Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia and Taiwan. This channel has already received more than 1500,000 views. Dr. Chien is currently directing saxophone ensemble and teaching saxophone lessons at Southwestern Adventist University in Keene, Texas. He lives a very fulfilling life with his wife, pianist Kate Kang, as dedicated parents of their two daughters, MuAnna and Mika.
