Zhang Mimi
Dr. Zhang Mimi, a horn faculty member at the Central Conservatory of Music, holds the position of Principal Horn and leads the brass section in the Symphony Orchestra of the Central Conservatory of Music.
She attended the middle school affiliated with the Central Conservatory of Music, where she studied with her father, Professor Chengxin Zhang. In 2004, she received a full scholarship to pursue her music education in the United States. After completing her studies at the Manhattan School of Music, Yale School of Music, and Rutgers University Mason School of Arts, she earned her doctorate degree in 2016, becoming the first person from China to achieve a doctorate in horn and musical arts.
Between 2012 and 2017, Dr. Zhang worked with the Princeton Symphony Orchestra and the American Ballet Theater, and taught as an artist lecturer during her time at Yale School of Music.
Notably, she was the first brass player to win the Spotlight Competition in the United States and performed as a soloist at the Los Angeles Music Center. Her interview was published in the Los Angeles Times the same year. Additionally, Dr. Zhang founded and currently serves as the artistic director of MIOMA, a company dedicated to US-China cultural exchange. MIOMA hosts international music festivals annually, featuring faculty members from prestigious institutions such as the Juilliard School, Yale School of Music, Manhattan School of Music, and Boston University. She has also recorded albums with world-class musicians during her participation in the Aspen and Norfolk music festivals. Since 2020, Conn & Selmer of Steinway signed her as a horn artist.
Dr. Zhang has been invited to give seminars, master classes, and performances at leading institutions, including Tsinghua University, Xiamen University, and the Sichuan Conservatory of Music. Her influence extends nationwide, with engagements in cities such as Fuzhou, Qingdao, Tianjin, Kunming, Nanchang, and Xinjiang.
Furthermore, many of her students have been admitted with scholarship to prestigious music schools worldwide, including the Manhattan School of Music, Mannes School of Music, Boston University College of Fine Arts, Boston Conservatory at Berklee, Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Stony Brook University, University of Minnesota, University of Washington, Universität der Künste Berlin, and Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart.
