Dr. Samuel L. Rowley
"Dr. Samuel L. Rowley is currently serving as the Chairman of the Department of Music, Director of Bands-Wind Activities and Associate Professor of Music at Virginia State University. His current duties include serving as the chief administrator of the VSU Department of Music and University Band Program as well as teaching undergraduate courses in music education, conducting and instrumental methods. Prior to joining the faculty at VSU, Dr. Rowley served as Chairman of the Department of Music and Director of Bands at Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Florida (2021-22), Director of Bands and Assistant Professor of Music at Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, Texas (2019-21), and Assistant Professor of Music Education at Florida A&M University (2015-2019). From 2007-2014, Dr. Rowley served as Assistant Director of Bands at North Carolina Central University located in Durham, North Carolina. In 2011, the North Carolina Central University Band became the first historically black college and university band program from the State of North Carolina to perform at the prestigious Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California. Prior to his appointment at North Carolina Central University, Professor Rowley taught public school music in Dekalb County, Georgia. During his tenure as an instrumental music educator in Dekalb County, he served as an Instrumental Music Teacher. During this time, each of his performing ensembles received straight superior ratings at district and national musical festivals. Dr. Rowley is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha Professional Music Fraternity, Florida Music Educators Association (FMEA), Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA), National Association for Music Education (NAfME), National Band Association (NBA), Collegiate Band Directors Association (CBDNA), Collegiate Music Society (CMS), and Free and Accepted Masonry."
