Dr. Tim Oliver

"Dr. Tim Oliver serves as Director of Bands and Professor of Music at the University of Mississippi, where he conducts the Wind Ensemble, teaches graduate and undergraduate conducting and wind band literature, and provides leadership for the Ole Miss Bands.

Prior to his appointment at Ole Miss, Dr. Oliver served for sixteen years as Director of Bands and Coordinator of Wind and Percussion Studies at Arkansas State University. He previously held faculty appointments at Temple University and the University of Kansas. He began his career as a junior and senior high school band director in Missouri and Florida. A native of Centralia, Missouri, Dr. Oliver earned his bachelor’s and two master’s degrees from Truman State University and his doctoral degree from Florida State University.

An active guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator, Dr. Oliver’s ensembles have earned regional and national recognition for performances of both established and contemporary repertoire. Over the past fifteen years, he has premiered or commissioned more than fifty new works for winds, either individually or through consortium participation. His ensembles have been invited through juried selection to perform at the 2010, 2014, and 2020 College Band Directors National Association Southwestern Division Conferences. Composers including David Maslanka, John Mackey, Andrea Reinkemeyer, James David, and Michael Markowski have complimented his interpretations of their works.

Dr. Oliver’s research and professional presentations focus on conducting pedagogy, wind band repertoire, and aesthetic distance. He has presented at the Midwest Clinic, national and divisional CBDNA conferences, and numerous NAfME and state music education conferences. His scholarship appears in the Journal of Band Research, NBA Journal, WASBE Newsletter, The Instrumentalist, and multiple state music education journals.

Committed to servant leadership and professional service, Dr. Oliver has served as Vice President and President-Elect of the CBDNA Southwestern Division and as a state chair for the National Band Association. In recognition of his commitment to mentoring students and colleagues, he received a university-wide Outstanding Faculty Advisor award. Dr. Oliver remains deeply committed to advancing the artistic, educational, and human dimensions of wind band performance."
